Discovering new methods of teaching theatre in Chicago & Lincoln, Nebraska --Project Summary: | |||
---|---|---|---|
This summer I traveled to Chicago, Illinois, for 8 days and then moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, all for continuing my theatre education. In Chicago I studied at the famous Second City Training Center and was enrolled in two classes. The first class covered improvisation (improv) basics and helped familiarize the student to techniques and exercises that are used by professional actors within the Chicago community. Chicago is one of the homes for great improv in the U.S. and Second City has been training students for over 50 years. The second class at Second City was Comedy Sketch Writing and helped teach the student how to properly write and craft comedic scenes that can be developed into complete plays. It also gave students a technique and a structure for comedy and helped train us in ways to become a stronger writer. During my stay in Chicago I saw 8 professional productions and wrote about the various shows in a blog that I created for this trip. After my 8 days in Chicago, I flew to Lincoln, Nebraska, to attend the International Thespian Festival (ITF). My trip to the festival was paid in part by a theatre director's scholarship from the ALEdTA. The ITF featured a huge variety of plays & musicals performed by thespian troupes across the country. The festival also offered 3+ hours of workshops each day for teachers and students. During the festival I saw another 9 performances & attended 10 workshops that covered a plethora of different topics for students and teachers. During the two weeks I was gone I saw 17 performances (40+ hrs) and attended over 50 hrs. of workshops. |
